Description
This original classical guitar footstool design is made from sapele wood, an imported hardwood from Africa with similar characteristics to mahogany. It is generally easier to work with but sometimes tears out when planing.
As a classical guitarist, I’ve spent hours in a chair with an elevated leg on a footstool. The metal footstool rivets have also come out and needed repair. I decided to make a footstool that would last for the rest of my playing life and be beautiful in my studio. This design is the result of that desire.
I’ve built these with fine furniture construction techniques without the use of screws. You’ll notice other designs available that have visibly filled holes where the screws were used. The construction of the classical guitar footstool takes longer but is worth the effort. As you can see from the shop photo, each stool is made individually. These footstools should last a few generations.
The finish is an oil/varnish blend of:
Minwax Helmsman spar urethane, satin sheen
Boiled linseed oil
Odorless mineral spirits
You can read about my choice and the source of this finish on the Lost Art Press website. The dimensions listed below may be slightly smaller or larger due to the nature of hand woodworking. Also, color variations will occur from piece to piece as with any naturally finished wood product.
