Thoughtful Guitar Instruction for Adults and Youth
I offer private guitar lessons in Charleston, South Carolina, for adults and youth, working with students across a variety of musical styles. While my background is in classical guitar, lessons are not limited to classical repertoire.
Instead, instruction focuses on fundamental technique, musicianship, and effective practice habitsโskills that support many approaches to the instrument, whether a studentโs interests lean toward classical, folk, fingerstyle, or other styles.
Lessons are individual, focused, and paced for long-term progress rather than quick results.
Who I Teach
Adult Guitar Lessons
Many adult students come to lessons with diverse goals: returning to the instrument after time away, developing stronger fundamentals, or seeking a deeper understanding of how music works on the guitar.
Adult lessons emphasize:
- Clear, efficient technique
- Practical reading and musicianship skills
- Tension-free coordination
- Thoughtful practice organization
- Repertoire chosen to support the studentโs interests
The aim is not to impose a single style, but to give students tools that make learning any style more sustainable and rewarding.
Youth Guitar Lessons
Youth instruction focuses on establishing a solid technical and musical foundation from the outset. Depending on age and readiness, lessons may incorporate listening-based learning, traditional reading, or a balanced combination of both.
Rather than rushing through material, the emphasis is on:
- Comfortable posture and coordination
- Clear listening habits
- Basic musical literacy
- Confidence and curiosity at the instrument
These foundations allow young students to grow naturally into a wide range of musical interests over time.
How Lessons Are Structured

Lessons are structured around the individual student rather than a rigid method. My classical training informs how technique, sound, and musical understanding are approached, but repertoire and goals are adapted to the student.
Classical technique is treated as a means of developing control, clarity, and awareness, not as a stylistic requirement. These principles transfer readily across musical contexts and help students avoid common plateaus and frustrations.
A significant portion of lesson time is devoted to understanding how to practice effectively, so progress continues between lessons.
