Dreams by Richard Summers
Dreams comes to us from the founder of the Toronto Guitar Institute. According to his biography, nine of his pieces are featured in the Royal Conservatory literature. He is also a member of The College of Examiners for RCM Examinations. That means he conducts Royal Conservatory guitar examinations across Canada. His students have seen success in a number of competitions as well.
Publications of Dreams
This piece originally appeared in Summers’ method A Contemporary Method for Classical Guitar, 3. I tried to find a copy of the method but I am not sure it is still in print. As mentioned above, the piece also appears in the current edition of the Royal Conservatory Guitar Series at the Preparatory Level. This is an older video of mine and the focus was off on the camera. I think the performance was fine and I hope you don’t mind too much.
About The Piece
This piece falls in the Royal Conservatory level of Preparatory. I really like that this piece is in E minor rather than A minor. It allows the student to learn and utilize the F-sharp for the key. It also allows for chordal playing followed by an arpeggio section and a return to the former. This gives the student a good way to focus on the balance of the hand in each section.
I have two degrees in guitar performance and was privileged to study under Aaron Shearer, Tom Kikta, David Skantar, Ken Karsh, Tim Bedner, and currently Christopher Berg. Outside my editorial work on this blog, I teach full-time across many genres including classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, and metal.
