We all love music! So why are so many people taking adult guitar lessons fearful of, dread or just put off learning a musical instrument? After years of teaching, there are some obvious conclusions…
Barriers To Adult Guitar Lessons
Personal enrichment, a lifelong dream, and sharing with others are common reasons adults begin learning the guitar. However, a few stumbling blocks exist when it comes to taking lessons.
- Fear of not being creative enough
- Lack of physical and mental capability
- Overall fear of failure
What went wrong?
Most guitar lessons focus on the “facts” of music. However, most lessons spend little time on creativity, music appreciation, and overall enjoyment of just making music. Adults need the facts but benefit from a deeper understanding of how and why. With a clear picture of how and why the physical challenges for an adult can always be alleviated.
It is amazing when you can tap into the areas of curiosity, creativity, and natural inquisitiveness of a student. It’s ok to relax a bit in order to remove any roadblocks that get in the way of reaching a student’s full potential.
Solution In Progress
It is my dream that every student walks away from a lesson inspired by creativity, exploration, joy, and fun.
My students:
- Learn to read music and rhythm from day one in preparation for playing all types of music
- Review and retain all their lessons through creativity and even writing their own music (even beginners!)
- Get all the benefits that science has shown music instruction provides including increased mental performance, stress relief, a sense of achievement, etc. All of this done in an encouraging and positive environment
- Move at a faster-than-average pace from beginner to intermediate playing
- Receive clear direction for practice during their weekly guitar lessons feeling energized instead of lost and confused when they return home
- Online learning is available for those outside of the local area or who have to travel often. Current online students study remotely from Ireland, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Montana, Florida, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
